A New Paradigm: Building National Resilience in a Chaotic Global Economy

For decades, we have been fed a linear narrative regarding the stages of a nation’s development that seems almost absolute. The old paradigm states that economic evolution begins with agriculture, moves to a manufacturing base, and finally reaches its peak in services. However, if we look at today’s reality, this theory appears obsolete and loses its relevance in explaining true modern power. Facts show that advanced nations actually rely on primary sector strength as their core foundation.

Look at the United States, Canada, and the Netherlands, which are often considered the pinnacle of high-tech and service civilizations today. Surprisingly, they are recorded as the largest exporters of agricultural products in the modern world without ever abandoning their other sectors. This proves that technological advancement should not make a nation leave its land, but rather significantly strengthen its value. Food power is real political power for any nation that wishes to dictate its own destiny.

Another misleading classic paradigm is the blind belief that free market mechanisms will always create maximum efficiency and effectiveness. This theory often ignores the variables of bargaining power and sovereignty that a sovereign nation should rightfully possess. In reality, full dependence on international markets often becomes a trap that weakens our national position. We need a more strategic approach to ensure that the basic needs of the people are not manipulated by wild global price fluctuations.

It is interesting to note the statement of the Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Amran Sulaiman, regarding Indonesia’s success in food independence. By focusing on producing main food products like rice domestically, Indonesia successfully pushed back commodity prices in major producer countries like Thailand. This happened because, as a large buyer, we finally gained much better bargaining power before them. Domestic independence turned out to be a powerful weapon to control national economic stability and global market prices.

This reality provides a valuable lesson about how fragile a country’s resilience is if it relies too heavily on unstable international supplies. The more we depend on imports, the easier it is for prices to be dictated by outsiders seeking unilateral profit. A nation’s real productivity will be exhausted just to chase inflation caused by rising prices of goods from abroad. Food sovereignty is not just political jargon; it is an absolute requirement for dignity and survival.

Considering the political atmosphere spreading to global economic conditions, which are currently being handled arbitrarily by a handful of powerful countries. We see how one nation’s policy can destroy global supply chains just for narrow geopolitical interests that harm many. In this uncertain situation, we need a new compass in viewing national development and resilience. I offer six new paradigms that we can apply together to strengthen our nation’s foundation so it remains standing firm.

First, we must focus on increasing productivity starting from the individual level by doing exactly what we can do right now. There is no need to think extremely like building giant new factories that require complex regulations and massive financing. Small, massive changes at the grassroots level often provide a more sustainable impact than grand, slow-moving projects. Productivity is the main key to ensuring that every citizen provides a real contribution to the growing national economy.

Second, it is absolute for us to increase national food and energy independence as the main fortress against foreign pressure. Food and energy are the two most crucial points that determine whether a country can continue to run or freeze. Without independence in these sectors, we will always be prisoners of global interests that can change at any time. We must ensure that our people’s stomachs and our industrial machines do not depend on foreign policy mercy.

Third, I strongly support the policy of population redistribution so that humans do not just pile up in increasingly crowded big cities. As we understand together, residents in big cities have a high tendency to work in the service sector, which is very fragile. This sector often cannot support their lives independently if a major economic shock occurs. Urban residents tend to drain government subsidies through various modern policies that are actually less productive in the long run.

The fact that about 80% of Indonesia’s population already lives in urban areas is a very terrifying number for me. As an economist, I see this excessive urbanization phenomenon as a time bomb for our food security and social stability. How can a nation be sovereign if the majority of its residents lose contact with the land and production sources? We need to move the rural economy back so that people have more dignified and independent living options there.

Fourth, we must truly side with local products, ranging from food to clothing needs and even electronic goods like mobile phones. Supporting domestic products will encourage production activities and further development by local producers who are full of potential. This will automatically suppress import numbers and keep the country’s foreign exchange reserves healthy and strong. Every rupiah spent on local products is a direct investment in the welfare of our own brothers and sisters.

Fifth, carrying out environmental improvements that are livable for humans and other living creatures must be a top priority in planning. This must be in line with long-term plans to switch to organic lifestyles and escape from unorganic supply chains. We cannot continue to rely on chemical inputs that destroy the ecosystem and the health of our own soil. Environmental sustainability is a future investment that is no longer negotiable for the survival of future generations.

As an economist, I see a very real fragility when we hope for agricultural fertility while using the wrong methods. It makes no sense to expect optimal results from land that is actually barren due to dependence on hydrocarbon urea. We must return to nature’s wisdom and improve soil structure naturally so that our land productivity is permanent. Organic fertilizer independence is a small step that will bring a huge impact on our sovereignty.

Sixth, start investing in companies that do not just sell empty dreams on the stock market, but have real progress. Look for business entities that have AEI 1.0 and MEMS 2.0 values that align with your risk profile and vision. Companies with these indicators show a commitment to healthy asset expansion and quality mass economic movement. Smart investment is an investment that also builds domestic economic strength to be able to compete in the world’s arena.

The combination of these six paradigms will create a national ecosystem that is much more resilient to geopolitical shocks. We can no longer use old ways to face new challenges that are increasingly complex and full of conflicting interests. It takes courage to change direction and start believing in our own strength without always following foreign theories. Indonesia has all the resources needed to be a truly independent, sovereign, and highly respected great nation.

We must realize that national resilience begins with the independence of households, communities, and finally reaching a wide state scale. Every step toward food, energy, and local production independence is a nail that strengthens the structure of our sovereignty. Do not let our future be dictated by a global elite that never cares about the fate of the people. It is time we take full control over our economy and future with real action.

Changing this paradigm is indeed not easy and requires consistency from all elements of the nation and civil society. However, if we remain stuck in fragile old patterns, we are just waiting for time to be crushed by history. Let us rebuild strength from the periphery, from the villages, and from the creative hands of our extraordinary nation. This is the third way, the path to true independence that will lead us to glory.
