The Essence of International Trade and the Betrayal of Globalization
Globalization is a transformative phenomenon that has fundamentally altered the face of human civilization through a very deep and extensive economic integration. This phenomenon allows the flow of information, technology, and commodities to move across national borders with speeds that were unimaginable in previous decades. The primary advantage of globalization lies in the creation of maximum global efficiency through production specialization based on the comparative advantage of each nation. With free exchange, every country can optimize its resources for collective welfare within an interconnected economic ecosystem that depends on one another.
The essence of international trade is actually rooted in a new way of thinking that prioritizes effectiveness and efficiency despite geographical distance. In modern economic logic, distance is no longer a major barrier thanks to advances in logistics and digital connectivity that unite world markets. The global community is invited to view the world as one large production table where every participant provides their best contribution. This mindset requires openness and trust between nations that economic interdependence will bring political stability and long-term prosperity for all of humanity.
Let us dissect this through a simple simulation regarding the opportunity cost mechanism that forms the basis of international trade theory today. Imagine if Country A had to spend production costs for one unit of a car equivalent to the value of ten tons of rice. On the other hand, Country B is able to produce the same car with a cost equivalent to only five tons of rice. This striking difference creates a space for collaboration that is highly beneficial for both parties if they agree to trade fairly.
In a healthy international trade mechanism, Country A should stop forcing itself to produce cars and focus entirely on increasing its agricultural productivity. Country A can then sell its surplus rice to the international market to buy cars from Country B at a much cheaper price. Meanwhile, Country B can concentrate all its industrial energy and resources on producing cars en masse to meet both domestic and foreign market needs. Such specialization creates a win-win situation where Country A saves resources and Country B gains maximum profit.
Through this scheme, consumption in both countries can increase beyond the limits of their own domestic production capabilities if done through international cooperation. Country A is no longer burdened by expensive car industry costs, while Country B receives a guarantee of stable food supplies from its partner. This collective efficiency is the sweet promise of globalization that has long been hailed by economic experts as the path to world prosperity. However, the reality on the ground lately has begun to show large cracks that threaten the foundations of this order.
Recent global political turmoil has given birth to extreme protectionist narratives from several large countries that feel disadvantaged by the free trade system. There is a tendency for certain countries to emphasize that their position is always losing compared to other business partners in international agreements. This rhetoric is often used as a political tool to justify unilateral actions that damage the collective agreements reached in world forums. This signifies a paradigm shift from mutually beneficial cooperation toward destructive competition filled with mutual suspicion among nations.
The condition is worsened by the phenomenon of exporting “political diseases” to other countries, creating systemic instability in various parts of the world. These provocative actions often trigger shortages of vital resources such as oil and gas needed by global industries to continue their operations. Tragically, the countries triggering such instability are often major producers of oil, gas, and fertilizer who actually rea p financial profits. Such practices are a very cruel form of market manipulation because they use basic human needs as weapons in the struggle for power.
Indirectly, unilateral actions that trigger global energy and food crises are a form of real betrayal against the civilized international trade community. When a country intentionally cuts supply chains or manipulates commodity prices, they are actually destroying the trust that drives the global economy. Commitments to free trade seem to be mere lip service when narrow national interests begin to ignore the values of humanity. The impact is deeply felt by developing countries that have a high dependence on imported commodities to maintain their stability.
Facing this uncertain situation, Indonesia needs to take strategic steps by prioritizing the fulfillment of internal needs independently and sustainably for its people. We must no longer hang the fate of the people’s stomachs entirely on international market dynamics that are easily manipulated. Food and energy sovereignty must become the government’s main agenda to protect the country’s existence from the threat of global crises. This step does not mean we close ourselves off, but rather build a strong economic defense fortress against external shocks.
One concrete step that could be considered is evaluating food importation policies from neighboring countries that may look profitable but are risky. We need to reconsider activating mass community livestock programs where every rural household is encouraged to raise cattle independently and sustainably. Cattle are not just economic assets, but also sources of protein and organic fertilizer that can strengthen food security effectively. By restoring the tradition of livestock at the family level, we are building an economic foundation resilient to logistics crises.
Even in urban areas, the community can be invited to revive the culture of raising poultry or chickens in limited available spaces. We must remember how this practice was common before being hit by the bird flu issues that occurred several years ago. With the application of proper health and biosecurity protocols, small-scale urban poultry farming can help reduce dependence on industrial meat supplies. This is a form of smart adaptation in facing potential food shortages caused by global distribution disruptions due to conflicts.
Why must we perform these micro-steps seriously and consistently amidst the current of modernization that is very fast and often instantaneous? Because through an honest business lens, these simple things are actually the main shield to keep the country’s existence standing tall. The instability intentionally created by certain global powers can slowly destroy the pillars of state life if we lack independence. High dependence on imported products is a very dangerous security gap that can be used by other parties to dictate.
Imagine a cruel scenario where a developed country systematically destroys the economic stability of another country just to revive its own industry. They manipulate trade rules and trigger conflicts so that their domestic industrial subsidiaries get new markets forced to submit to their will. This action is not just a competitive business strategy, but a form of betrayal against the values of social and economic life. Destroying the welfare of other nations for one’s own prosperity is a black stain in human history.
International solidarity should be built on respect for the right of every nation to grow and develop healthily without any economic intimidation. However, when global market mechanisms are used as a new form of colonization, then self-sufficiency becomes the only logical way out. We must be able to produce what we eat and consume what we produce to break the harmful chain. Strengthening the SME sector and people’s agriculture is the main key to ensuring that the economic wheels keep turning.
The government needs to provide real incentives for local farmers and ranchers so they have strong competitiveness against the onslaught of foreign products. Education regarding efficient modern agricultural techniques while remaining based on local wisdom must continue to be socialized to the younger generation. If every household has protein and carbohydrate resilience independently, then the nation’s bargaining power in the international community will increase. We will no longer be easily pressured by embargoes or commodity price games by certain producer countries.
The world is indeed becoming more connected, but we must remain vigilant so that this connectivity does not become a suffocating snare. Fair globalization is globalization that provides space for every country to be economically sovereign without fear of political sabotage from others. Betrayal of honest international trade principles must be responded to with a solid, independent, and nationally integrated domestic production base. This is a struggle to maintain national dignity amidst the siege of global interests that often ignore morality.
Returning to the concept of community livestock and household farming is a visionary step to answer increasingly complex and uncertain global challenges. This does not mean we are moving backward, but rather taking the noble values of independence to be combined with technology. Every cow raised and every tree planted by the people is a bullet to fight economic hegemony trying to destroy. This collective awareness must be immediately awakened before a larger crisis paralyzes our ability to survive as a sovereign nation.
International economic integration should bring peace, not become a trigger for scarcity that miseries many people for the sake of political elites. When fertilizer becomes scarce and expensive due to global political games, our domestic food production is under a serious threat of instability. Therefore, resource diversification and independent development of organic fertilizers become very crucial to keep our agricultural land productivity remains optimal. We must be able to see opportunities in the midst of crisis by creating innovative and applicable local solutions.
Ultimately, the essence of international trade relations must be returned to the spirit of sincere and honest collaboration for overall human progress. We reject all forms of betrayal against the global economic system that only benefits the strong while destroying the existence of others. Focusing on meeting internal needs through activating the people’s economic potential is the most dignified step we can take. Indonesia must stand tall on its own two feet, processing its natural wealth for the prosperity of its people.
Let us start with small steps in our respective environments to support the national food and energy independence movement for the future. Support for local products and strengthening the household economy will be a solid foundation for Indonesia’s national resilience in globalization. With the spirit of mutual cooperation, we will surely be able to pass all international political and economic challenges. Indonesia’s future is in our own hands, through hard work, innovation, and loyalty to the values of economic justice.
